Book Review and Discussion Group

The Gift of Years: Growing Old Gracefully by Joan Chittister is a moving book that invites us to cherish the blessings of aging and overcome its challenges. In other words, to age well and not just grow old. In 40 short passages she has written about the life issues that emerge with age, issues such as solitude, wisdom, sadness, outreach, forgiveness and loneliness. It is a compendium of wisdom for all who want to live a full, centered, and purposeful life in their aging years.

You are invited to participate in a discussion group on the relevancy of some of the book’s passages for your own life and the lives of others. It will be held at the Dummerston Center Church for six sessions every otber Wedneday starting September 11 from 1:30 to 2:30. At each session we will read one passage from the book and reflect on its meaning for us. You will not need to have your own copy of the book but copies will be available to borrow or buy at a reduced price.

The topic for the Oct. 9 discussion is Loneliness. Unlike the other meetings which are held at the Dummerston Center Church, this meeting will take place at the Dummerston Center Grange, downstairs, due to Apple Pie Festival preparations at the church The topic for the Oct. 23 discussion is Newness. All are invited to come to one or more of the discussions. The remaining two will be on Nov. 6 and 20, on topics yet to be decided. For more information contact Claire at 254-6098.

Testimonials

Thanks for the prompt and wonderful service to my neighbor with (delivery) of a hospital bed and wheel chair. She and her husband are very grateful. Cares will have a great fan in them.

JW

Thanks for all of your help in moving some furniture out of my garage. Now I can put my car in the garage this winter. It really helps when you can’t do some things for yourself any more.

TD

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the warm winter clothing for my daughter. The jacket was absolutely beautiful and you would have like to see the smile on her face when she tried everything on :). Thank you.

Thank goodness for your (medical equipment loan) program. We are so grateful for the assistance. Having to purchase these things knowing that we would need them  only temporarily would have been a big financial burden. We appreciate your help
